Monday 30th March 2009The Campaign for Drawing's Big Draw awards took place on 30th March 2009
at the British Museum.
Matravers School were the Barbara Whatmore
Charitable Trust Winners
The awards ceremony was following our Olympic arts day which was part of the Cultural
Olympiad held on the 27th September, 2008 at Matravers School, Wiltshire. Kevin ran an
Olympic themed art workshop and Project Ambassador Beijing Olympian Sam Weale came along
to meet the students and their families. Sam also spent the day touring the Big Draw
events at the school and posing for photographs for the photographic art class - 'drawing
with light'
As well as the Olympic arts workshops, both Sam and Olympic artist Kevin Whitney gave
presentations about their trip to the Beijing Olympics.
Other events that day included:Simon Packard RA led workshops using charcoal and paint to
respond to the sculptures. Jane Johnson encouraged a group of over 16s to use sticks and
ink and record a model with line, texture and form. Student dancers, cameras, video and
light sticks were used to record time and movement (Sam took part in this by wearing his
fencing equipment) Set to music these images have been made into a film. Matravers junk
band led by one of the students and the skeletons had a rare outing from their cupboard
which inspired more drawing, in felt, charcoal and chalk. Visitors to the event including
not only the schools pupils but parents and neighbours from across the area. Pictures from
the event can be found in our gallery - click
