The Olympic Arts Project kicked off its run up to the 2012 Olympics with a 2 day art workshop at Culverhay School, Bath. Olympic artist Kevin Whitney ran the classes with project administrator Raine Harvey-Cantrell. The pupils produced 4 canvasses which will be hung in the school hall.

During the 2 days art workshops the students were visited by several people including the Sponsor Mrs. Jennifer Skellett and the Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council Peter Edwards with his wife Anne. Peter said “My wife and I were delighted to be invited to visit Culverhay School last Friday to view the Olympic themed art created by four teams of youngsters, who completed four 6 foot by 6 foot works of art in an amazing two days depicting the forthcoming Olympics, and we were very impressed that they had included Para Olympics. The children were so well behaved, polite and had obviously bonded well due to the experience. I will be more than please to render such assistance as is required for their masterpieces to be displayed in the Guildhall in early May 2012 for all to see in the run up to the Olympic Games”

Other visitors included the Chairman of the school Governors Cllr. Gerry Curran and local ward councillor, Cllr. Dine Romero. Word soon spread that Kevin was back at the school and to the organisers surprise several past pupils who have since moved onto further education called in to show their support and to encourage the students taking part in the 2011 art workshops.

The project which was created by local lady Loraine Morgan-Brinkhurst has plans in place to provide many local schools with Olympic themed art workshops in Bath and the surrounding between now and the Olympics in July of next year. The project has also arranged several exhibitions across the City for next year.

Kevin Whitney said: "It was very interesting for me to be back teaching Olympic Art again at Culverhay, after a two year gap. I found the quality of talent the students have as excellent as it was before, due to the quality of the teaching the students interest. I wish to thank the class teacher Martine Gillespie for her support”

To enable to project to run more workshops in schools the project team would love to hear from businesses and people who maybe interested in finding out how to sponsor a workshop, art materials etc or how to get involved. Please do contact the team on: 01225 823004 for more information.
